END PLASTIC SOUP

Ghost nets as the primary source of plastic pollution in the oceans.

The issue of ghost nets is well-known: During fishing operations, nets become entangled and cannot be retrieved. As a result, they must be cut loose and are lost at sea. This represents a significant financial loss for fishermen, and the nets pose a deadly threat to marine life of all kinds, causing immense ecological damage.

The specific nature of this damage, along with the economic and social consequences of "net pollution" in local fishing grounds, has now been investigated in Portugal on behalf of Mare Nostrum.

At this point, we extend our thanks to our member Urs Endress, who personally commissioned, financed, and supervised the study.
